Fifth Grade Students Experienced the World of Measurement

STEM teacher, Mr. Lee, introduced students to the 3D printing process by first teaching the history and basic concepts of printing.  He shared models of motors, race cars, a scaling of a barn, and even rings created by his students.

Next, students practiced scanning an object, programs for slicing objects, and then the final transfer for printing.  The process was demonstrated by creating a Cardinal keychain to give a full visual of 3D printing.

Students were fascinated with the process and quickly recognized the relations between math concepts such as decimals and geometric terms.  It was very interesting for them to see the transformation of an idea into a prototype.

They loved designing objects to be printed using online engineering design programs.  We cannot wait to see their ideas created in real time.  Mrs. Kersey’s class appreciates the opportunity to experience 3D printing and the neat advancements in technology.
