The first two weeks of the Reading Recovery Program at Pleasant View Elementary starts with Roaming Around the Known. During "Roaming" the teacher stays with what the child already knows and does not introduce any new items to learn. Teachers are to use this time to review what the child already knows and helps each detect what is familiar in order to build fluency. Some of the potential befefits of this period are that the teacher can observe the child's responses and processing behaviors in-depth without needing to record everything that occurs. This allows the teacher and child to get to know each other in an unpressured environment. Also, working only with what the child knows will make that child feel successful! This feeeling can lead to discovery of things that the child did not think he/she knew as it solidifies what the child already does know. It supplies a strong foundation of knowledge on which the teacher can build.
